I’ve pondered the meaning of the word ‘virgin’ recently in an attempt to get to the roots of the astrological sign of the virgin (Virgo). Although it’s natural (mainly because generations of people have been influenced by puritanical religions) to assume the word means ‘chaste’, the etymology of the word (taken from the latin word ‘virga’) actually means pure or untainted and an even older meaning of the word means self-possessed. In ancient mythologies the virgin goddesses did not represent chastity or sexually inexperienced; they reflect the power of potential that has been untainted by life.
On September 15, 2012, we will experience the annual cycle of the Moon in Virgo. All new moons reflect the beginning of a new process reflected by the sign the new moon is located. In this case, the sign of Virgo indicates that it is time for us to take our experiences over the last year, and refine them into something that is productive and useful. If you have a natal planet that is activated, the nature of the planet will need to be addresses as well as the house the new moon is located.
The landscape of Virgo involves duty, responsibility, and management. In order to gain the most from this new moon we need to create order out of chaos and manage our time and resources productively. Since many of the Virgoan goddesses are also goddesses of the grain and harvest, the new moon indicates a time where it is beneficial for us to take inner inventory and eliminate any behaviors, relationships, or vices that may no longer be of use to use. This will allow our inner garden to be cleaned and as a result we will begin to grow.
